I recently completed my Honors Sports Photography Portfolio at PennWest Edinboro. This year, I had the opportunity to turn my Intro to Photography course into an honors course through the PennWest Honors College. To earn honors status, I had to take on an additional advanced final project.
I decided to explore sports photography for this project. I have a strong interest in pursuing sports photography and social media creation, so it seemed like a no-brainer!
Over the 3 months I spent completing this project, I worked with 7 sports.
These included:
-softball
-basketball
-wheelchair basketball
- wrestling
-indoor track
-outdoor track
-lacrosse
I gained new skills and developed valuable insight into the sports media industry. Some of the skills I developed included:
-Learning the best camera settings for shooting indoor and outdoor sports.
- Incorporating artistic elements like depth of field, frame-in-frame shooting, motion blur, and many more into my sports photography
- Capturing high-speed and intense moments
-Understanding the best moments to take a photo of in each sport to capture the emotion and intensity of the game
-Working with coaches and directors for the best on-field shooting positions and photo opportunities
I was overall successful with the execution of my project. I presented the project to my class, and it was displayed in full at the David Weinkauff Film Festival.
I hope to continue my journey in sports media and, one day, use my skills to work for a professional team. In the meantime, I will continue to build my skills and experience while working with collegiate teams.
I am excited to see where this journey takes me!
